Challenge
Construction of data and voice infrastructure at the ALBA Synchrotron Light Facility Research Center – the biggest government investment ever in Spain in a scientific re-search project. Accommodate for large electromagnetic forces due to electron accelerator. Allow for synchronisation of network connected scientific instruments and equip-ment. Create a reliable, fast and fault-free installation with flexible option to extend the infrastructure.
Solution
A complete solution for laboratories and administrative functions developed through installer partners Sociesa-Elecnor and Atlas Comunicaciones. R&M was chosen as supplier speci-fically due to the verification of performance and quality of the cabling components and products. Solution based on high-performing R&M Real 10 LAN with 10 Gbit/s Ethernet.
In the areas surrounding the light accelerator strong electromagnetic interference occurs. The solution was to install a shielded Cat. 6 / Cat. 7 copper cabling solution from R&M. This was implemented through R&M systems integrator Ambar Telecomunicaiones.
Timing synchronisation between the accelerator and its targets is crucial and requires the smallest possible signal delay. These connections are based on fibre optic network infrastructure with nearly 200 pre-assembled fibre optic cables from the R&M VARIOline System, with OM3 MM connectors, SC-RJ and LC Duplex.
Result
Guaranteed high-performance for data and voice. Copper cabling available even in vicinity of the electron accelerator. Signalling delay in the R&M fibre optic cabling components were more than ten times better than the specification laid down by the customer. Optimal cooperation between R&M, the distributor, system integrators and the installer.
