The new data center of network operator Swisscom AG in Bern-Wankdorf features a high-density network. At its core, the infrastructure is based on a solution from Swiss cabling specialist R&M. The structured copper cabling includes 11 500 links, 23 000 shielded Cat. 6A connection modules, 280 kilometers Cat. 7A AWG 22 data cable and several hundred 48-port, 1U High Density (HD) panels from R&M.
The infrastructure helps make the data center in Bern-Wankdorf one of the safest and most efficient plants of its kind in Europe. Notably, Swisscom was the first Swiss provider to fulfill the criteria of the availability class Tier IV. One factor that helps the data center achieve the required operational reliability is the transmission quality of the R&M products. Thanks to their innovative shielding, the Cat. 6A connection modules from R&M offer outstanding attenuation values (NEXT) even with short links of eight to ten meters.
The network is designed as a Hybrid Delivery Bus (HDB). The concept of Swisscom and the Bern-based planning firm RZintegral AG corresponds to a full-mesh topology in the core layer and a tree topology in the access layer. The access switches are in a central wire center. This means every rack can be connected centrally and every network made available all over. This concept required greater use of copper cabling. The high packing density of the R&M solution was exactly what the planners were looking for. Nevertheless, the cabling system is still flexible enough to be able to adapt the data center to suit new requirements at any time.
