Shielded twisted pair (STP) cabling is the solution of choice where increased protection against electromagnetic interference from outside (EMI) is required. It is considered as being particularly reliable for high data rate transmissions.

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) copper cabling is are considered as being particularly reliable. It is the standard solution for secure high data rate transmissions in the office world and in the industrial environment. R&M recommends this solution when premium installations are required or when increased protection for data transmission is required due to sensitive applications or significant electromagnetic interference.

Full product range

R&M offers different protection levels, depending on the cable shield design. Aluminum coated PET foils provide a high frequency protection to the twisted pair or to the cable as a whole. Woven braids from tin coated copper wires around the outside of the cable optionally add a low resistance, low frequency protection for the cable. Based on the available budget and application, the ideal cable design / protection level can be chosen from the R&Mfreenet portfolio.
R&Mfreenet connectivity is the optimum platform for all shielded transmission classes and offers reserves for all applications, of both today and tomorrow.
Three different transmission classes are available:
Cat. 5e / Class D*
Cat. 6 / Class E*
Cat. 6A / Class EA*

Important shield termination and grounding

Thanks to its advanced, installation-friendly connection and mature termination technology the R&M RJ45 connectivity can easily terminate cables with all available shielding variants. Generating a reliable, long-lasting end to end shield termination with the required low impedance is a non-trivial task. A good connection between connectivity shield and all shield elements of the cable are important (360° contacts). A cable strain relief, independent from the shield contact to reduce mechanical stress and influence of cable movement to the contact quality, is also often overlooked.
Unfortunately, checking the quality of a shield termination outside a laboratory is very difficult. At the end, trust in the experience of the manufacturer is the only choice to make sure, that the protection of the cabling is maintained over the lifetime of the installation. Optimum heat dissipation with STP

When using Remote Powering with LAN cabling (Power over Ethernet, PoE), heat dissipation properties of the cable becomes important. In order to reduce the maximum temperature inside a cable bundle in the installation, heat produced by the PoE must be able to dissipate out from the bundle as easily as possible. Shielded cabling will keep the cable bundles cooler, by transporting the heat flow around the cable to the outside. The more metal in the shield construction, the better the heat dissipation. In general, shielded cabling will help to support longer link segments.
